Jean-Pierre Rossignol

Jean-Pierre Rossignol painter figurative expression and intaglio engraver

A word from Juliette about the artist ...

"The gesture, the tool, the engraving chip"
Numbered intaglio print listed at the national library in Paris

I remember my emotion when I first entered the atmosphere of Jean-Pierre Rossignol's engraving studio - it was all the more mysterious for me since I did not know the work at all of engraving which is the praise of slowness ... but also a somewhat confidential place with a transparent screen constituted by a wooden frame stretched with tracing paper, to dim the light so as to standardize and whiten the day that falls on the work table so that the size appears as darker and in the background jazz music and the scent of varnishes and inks.

I also learned that "the chisel" was a solitary work because the precise gesture does not suffer from any error since there is no repentance possible.

That in the gesture of engraving there was a very strong tension - which is annoying - because the engraver pushes hard with his hand his chisel in copper to trace each size but at the same time his arm and his shoulder hold his hand to avoid any skid…

Everything seemed very complicated but fascinating: I discovered all these chisels with carefully sharpened tips tidy for some and pell-mell for those who served the copper plate on which the engraver was working each size with more chisels or less fine depending on whether the size was thin or deep.

You guessed it, I like engraving and I just wish by these few lines (there would be so much to write on all the stages before arriving at the draw… which blackens the hands !!! quite a story again) make you want to find out more about this rare work: yet the chisel technique is certainly the oldest, most difficult process.

I always advise a person who comes to the gallery to seek a gift to offer but who does not know the pictorial tastes of the person: "offer a print, it is an original work, listed and deposited at the BN, which does not take not too much space, which goes everywhere in an interior: you will never go wrong and it is a pledge of refinement and elegance on a wall.
